First Mamankam Festival of Kerala AD 829

The first Mamankam Festival or Mamangam Festival of Kerala was held in AD 829. This festival was held every 12 years, which last for 28 days. Mamankam was held at Thirunavaya in Kerala, India. Thirunavaya is located on the banks of Bharathapuzha River in Kerala, South India.

During the festive occasion, various cultural activities, art performances, martial arts were performed at the shores of Bharathapuzha. Pilgrims from distant places as well as travellers from foreign countries used to visit and participate in this.

This is a unique festival and is also remembered as the bloody battles by the Chavers or Suicide squad during the festival. The last such Mamankam festival is believed to have been held in the year 1755.

Modern Mamankam Festival was performed in the year 1999.
