Indian freedom fighter Chittaranjan Das was also popularly known as Deshbandhu, which means Friend of the country. C.R. Das was an Indian politician and leader of Swaraj Party in Bengal. He was born on 5 November 1869 and died on 16 June 1925.
In 1923, he along with Motilal Nehru and Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy founded Swaraj Party. In the year 1919-1922, he was the prominent figure in Bengal during the Non-Cooperation Movement.
He became the first mayor, when the Calcutta Municipal Corporation was formed. Subhas Chandra Bose was one of his disciples.
