KM Beenamol first Keralaite to win Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award

KM Beenamol is the first Keralaite to win Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award (RGKR) – the highest sports award in India. K.M. Beenamol was born as Kalayathumkuzhi Mathews Beenamol in Kombidinjal, a village in Kerala. She was the 3rd Indian women to reach an Olympics semi-final after PT Usha and Shiny Wilson.

Olympian KM Beenamol along with Anjali Ved Pathak Bhagwat shared the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 2002 - 2003.

In 2002 Asian Games held at Busan, KM Beenamol won the gold medal in women's 800m. 

Beenamol was awarded the Padma Shri in 2004.
