Self Respect Movement was started by Periyar E. V. Ramasamy in Tamil Nadu. This is an anti-caste movement which was founded in 1925 to create a society where backward castes will obtain equal human rights. Self Respect Movement was aimed to encourage the backward communities to first have a self respect in the context of a caste-based society to make an end to caste based discrimination. E.V. Ramaswami Naciker, also known as Periyar or EVR, was also the founder of Dravidar Kazhagam political party. EVR is the short form of Erode Venkata Ramasamy.
